GET OUT THE VOTE

Efforts are being made to recruit volunteers to talk to voters about what’s at stake in this election.  Two different training sessions will be held next week.  Both GOTV trainings will be potlucks in the Democratic office at 713 E. Green Bay St.  It is important that we have all hands on deck going forward in this final push to ensure that voters get to the polls and elect our progressive candidates.  Volunteer today!

Tom Nelson’s campaign has focused on talking to and turning out undecided voters that historically play a major role in electing Democratic candidates, especially Congressional candidates like Tom Nelson.  Volunteers talk to voters to help Russ and Hillary get elected as well.  This GOTV training will be held on Monday, Oct. 10th at 6:00 pm. Contact John Cary at 721-946-5717 or johnc@wisdems.org to help in this effort.

The Coordinated Campaign is targeting Democratic voters to ensure we get out the vote for candidates up and down the ticket.   DPW Regional Organizing Director, Emma Tyler, will present this GOTV briefing on Tuesday, Oct. 11th at 5:00 pm.  Contact Meg Sievert a 920-551-0887 or msievert@wivictory2016.org to confirm your participation.

UNITED TO AMEND MOVEMENT

A non-partisan network of concerned citizens is working to amend the constitution so that the Supreme Court’s decision to allow corporations and super PACs to spend unlimited amounts of money on elections is reversed. Citizens United can be overturned by local communities passing resolutions that call for a constitutional amendment.  Once enough states press Congress on this, they will be forced to act.

Nettie McGee will be the speaker at our October 19th meeting.  She will inform us of the procedure that can be followed to begin the process of having local referendums.  She will speak at 7:00 pm at the Civic Center (225 S. Main St.)

The 3rd Presidential debate will begin at 8:00 pm. After a short meeting, there will be a debate watch party in which the debate will be viewed on a large screen.

CANDIDATES’ RURAL RALLY

In an attempt to engage western Shawano County voters in this election, a rally will be held at the historic depot in Eland on October 18th.  Candidates Tom Nelson, John Powers, William Switalla and others will be present.

The doors will open at 5:00 pm for this family affair. The event will include food, music and a chance to view memorabilia.  At 6:00 pm the candidates will begin speaking,

INEQAULITY FOR ALL

The Robert Reich film “Inequality for All” will be viewed at the Civic Center on November 16th at 7:00 pm at the Civic Center.  All are invited to attend this showing. A short meeting will be held prior to the viewing.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Officers for the 2017-2019 cycle will be elected at the Shawano Dem’s Christmas party which will be held on Wed., December 7th at 7:00 pm at the Civic Center.  Members will have an opportunity to nominate officers (including themselves) at the November meeting.

Those attending the party should bring a snack to share.

Chair’s Comments

We’re in the home stretch of this election year.  It’s time to get out and vote for a continuation of President Obama’s ideas and to vote for a change in federal and state government.   Voting in this election is extremely important.

Early voting has begun in the City of Shawano and the Township of Wescott.  All other townships and villages can contact their clerk to make arrangements to vote beginning October 24th.  Paperwork for absentee voting should be filled out and returned by Nov. 4th.  Remember what someone once said, “The world is ruled by those who show up to vote.”
