PBS will be presenting a documentary on the rise and fall of Senator Joseph McCarthy on Monday, January 6th at 8:00 pm. The Wisconsin Republican’s anti-communist campaign made him one of the most powerful men in America in the 1950’s. And one of the most reviled. Researchers for the documentary used the archives of the Shawano Historical Museum. Unfortunately, McCarthy’s picture still sits above the jury box in the courtroom of the Shawano County Courthouse.
2020 IS HERE!
We’ve been anticipating the next presidential election for some time. Now that it’s 2020, the final push is on. Many volunteers will be needed to ensure that we elect Democrats.
On January 15th there will be a “Preparing to Win” kick off at the Shawano Civic Center at 6:00 pm. Northeast Wisconsin Regional Organizing Director, Nick Morgan will outline the strategies that will be used as we interact with voters. Come, listen and enjoy some refreshments together.
CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION
Some voters in Shawano County are among those 240,000 Wisconsin voters who have been purged. A recent court ruling by a conservative group opened the door to remove some voters from the rolls. Even if you haven’t moved in the last 10 years or had your name changed, it is still a good idea to check if you are still registered to vote. You can check and re-register at
www.myvote.wi,gov or contact your municipal clerk.
ECONOMIC GROWTH AND THE RIGHT TO VOTE
“The Economy” will be the topic of the January op-ed for the Shawano Leader. Low unemployment numbers and a booming stock market have no relevance in the lives of most Americans who don’t own stocks and live pay check to paycheck.
February 18th is the Primary Election. The topic of voting and Republican’s voter suppression will be explored. Participation is important in this primary. Voters can vote for a Supreme Court Justice narrowing the field from three candidates to the two who will appear on the April ballot. Progressives Jill Karofsky and Ed Fallone will be on the ballot along with conservative Justice Daniel Kelly. Jill is an energetic former state and local prosecutor who says she has the experience and values to get our Supreme Court back on track. Ed says he has the independence, fairness and integrity to be a justice. He has taught future Supreme Court judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys.

At the beginning of a new year; it is time to contemplate what the year might bring. With President Trump’s Impeachment trial looming and the killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimai, the future of our country and the world is uncertain. We live in dangerous times and need to hang on to the hope that the months ahead will be better for all.
It amazes me that there are so many grassroots organizations wanting to make a difference. People who want to be a part of in a weekly climate strike can join youth climate activists on Friday nights on Houdini Plaza in Appleton from 5:00-7:00 pm. On January 11th there will be a Women’s March and Climate March in Wausau from noon-1:00 pm. Those concerned about Fair Maps can attend a meeting on January 21st at 6:00 pm in Green Bay. The Shawano Area Women’s Network works on many issues affecting voters. Join in the efforts.
